Wilmington Weekend Update #2

Y'all,

It's been a really pleasant weekend for the Wilmington branch of the family. Yesterday started at the beach, where Sellers worked on his boogie-boarding and took several good-natured tumbles into the waves when I pushed him out into some awesome breakers that he hadn't quite decided to ride yet. Abby has learned to use a handheld fishing net to grab schools of minnows out of the waves, and we had a little bucket teeming with little silver fish, all of whom were successfully released despite Julian's apparent taste for sushi. Julian helped Mommy build sand castles, although beach erosion took its toll on their real estate.

After a bath we went into the yard to plant the smallest sprigs of mondo grass you can mail-oder. Within a few years we should have some lovely borders on our beds. The work on the garden shed is nearly complete, with a decades-old cedar shake roof (full of holes) being briefly exposed to the sunlight and then quickly covered again with new tin. Unfortunately we won't be able to replace the layers of lead paint that covered the original.

Saturday took us to the hardware store (which the kids for some reason find boring) and the yard some more. In the afternoon we had neighbors over for grouper and margaritas (not in that order). Their ten-year-old son gamely entertained Abby, Sellers, and Julian; we can only guess what his parents paid him.

Working back to the Fourth of July we had another beach trip (just read the first paragraph again - it was the same except more sun and less parking), more yard work, and a fireworks show courtesy of our next-door-neighbor. Abby loved waving sparklers around in a way that would not please the fire marshall. Julian performed some sort of aboriginal fireworks dance. The kids fell into bed with distant booms echoing from the waterway.

It's on to a busy week, with Margaret actually overbooked in clinic (hooray, I think!) and two of my partners on vacation. What does next weekend hold? I'm guessing yardwork and a beach trip, but we'll just have to see...

Love,
David
